Free Gift with Purchase

To set up the Free Gift with Purchase (FGWP) functionality, start by creating a discount. Navigate to Discounts in the Shopify Admin sidebar and click Create Discount. You’ll be prompted to choose a discount type—select Buy X Get Y.

Next, you’ll be directed to the Create Discount page, where you’ll define the following settings:

  • Method: Automatic Discount
  • Set Title: this will show in the cart when the discount is applied
  • Customer Spends: minimum purchase amount
    • Select the minimum amount
    • Any Items From: Specific Collections
      • Choose the collection
  • Customer Gets:
    • Quantity: 1
    • Any Items From: Specific Products
      • Choose the product
    • At a Discounted Value: Free
    • Set a maximum number of uses per order: 1
  • Combinations
    • Product Discounts: yes
    • Order Discounts: yes
    • Shipping Discounts: yes

Finally, set the Active Dates to specify when the promotion will be valid and hit Save!

After creating the discount, you’ll need to update the theme settings under FGWP Settings, as shown in the screenshot below. Here’s a breakdown of each setting:

  • Enable Free Gift with Purchase: Check this box to activate the functionality. The FGWP feature won’t work unless this option is enabled.

  • Promo Collection: Select the same collection you used when creating the discount. Items added to the cart from this collection will count towards the total purchase amount required to qualify for the free gift.

  • Promo Product: Choose the same product you selected when setting up the discount. This is the free gift that will be added to the cart.

  • Free Gift CTA Text: This text appears in the cart if the cart qualifies for the free gift but the gift is not in the cart. This happens when the cart is eligible but the customer has removed the free gift.

  • Minimum Cart Value: Enter the same minimum spend amount you set when creating the discount.

  • Promotion Text: This message will display in the cart when the cart does not meet the requirements for the free gift.

    • Use the asterisk (*) where you want the minimum purchase amount to appear and the hashtag (#) where you want the collection name to be shown.
    • For example, “Add $* to the cart from the # collection to earn your free gift” will display as “Add $200 to the cart from the dresses collection to earn your free gift.”
    • The asterisk (*) will be replaced by the value you entered for the minimum cart value, and the hashtag (#) will be replaced by the collection name.

    Note: You can also manually input the values and skip using the asterisk and hashtag symbols if preferred.

  • Promo Text When Achieved: This message will display in the cart when the cart is eligible for the free gift.

This will complete the FGWP setup and ensure your customers can see the promotion clearly at all stages of their purchase!
